Equine Bone Scintigraphy
A Nuclear bone scan, scintigraphy, is another diagnostic that is often recommended on subtle neurological cases that have performance issues. The scan can be done to help evaluate when other potential lameness problems such as high suspensory disease might occur and display with increased stumbling. In addition, some maturing horses get facet arthrosis, enlarged facets, which may not show up on radiographs but will on a scan. Older horses may also have joint disease in the cervical (neck region) from OCD (osteochondritis disease) but other joints as well, including stifles, hocks, fetlocks, and shoulders. A bone scan can be used for a complete diagnosis to fully evaluate your horse for proper treatment.
