These images are graphic. Only those who would like to see a more detailed amputation surgery should view them. Case history - Although the initial fracture repair with a plate, screws and basket implants, were properly in place, the foot was not getting circulation. An amputation was done to save the horse and keep the other foot from going bad. During surgery, the leg bone is exposed while the skin is carefully prepared for a skin flap. The skin flap will later cover the end of the stump. Gigli wire is used to cut the through the bone. The skin flap is then pulled over the bone to close the stump. The stump is casted and the leg is measured for a walking bar/cast. The horse will use the walking bar/cast until the stump heals and the next step towards a premanent prosthetic can be made.
